Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) will report second-quarter earnings tomorrow, with a caveat for investors: an orderly wind-down of its flagship Nova models, including Premier, Omni, Reel, and Canvas. Instead, it decided to pool resources toward a single frontier model, led by researcher Pieter Abbeel. Is management focusing on where it believes it can develop an edge?

Can accelerating AWS growth change the narrative for Thursday’s earnings release, as AI capex fears dominate?

Why the Nova Wind-Down Is Not Capitulation

OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) had success with their frontier AI models, while Amazon never came close with its AI approach. Therefore, its strategy shift into one frontier model could change the narrative, but how will investors interpret this move? It impacted our bearish commentary as outlined in last week’s note, “Amazon’s AGI Retreat Ahead of Earnings: Is the AI Story Cracking Before Q2 Results?”

Amazon stated it would continue to provide support and migration paths for Nova. Still, the wind-down will remove duplicated training runs, making inference more efficient and freeing capacity for revenue-generating models, but this brings its AI capex into question. Will the re-focus ease investors' capex anxiety?

Core Amazon Fundamentals and Technical Facts to Consider

AWS will determine the post-earnings release price action. While some analysts have upgraded their growth expectations to as high as 33% year-over-year, countering bearish calls for deceleration from last quarter’s 28% growth rate, it appears investors have already priced in disappointment. Did Wall Street underestimate the next part of Amazon’s plan?

Amazon Fundamental Analysis Snapshot

Price action rests inside of a horizontal support zone, but bullish trading volumes have picked up. The Bull Bear Power Indicator is bearish with an ascending trendline, nearing a bullish crossover, which traders should closely monitor.

Where Bears Push Back and Why It May Not Hold

Bears make a valid point by arguing that Amazon’s roughly $200 billion in capex not only decimated free cash flow but has also led it to retire its Nova models. It resembles conceding frontier AI to rivals with deeper research budgets and expertise. The talent exodus at its AGI unit, now consolidated under Peter DeSantis, adds to the concern.

Bulls argue against Nova as a competitive edge, noting that Amazon’s competitive advantage rests with its Trainium chip, the $38 billion OpenAI cloud agreement, and that AWS monetizes AI regardless of which model customers use, as it captured nearly a 30% share of global cloud infrastructure. How does this affect Amazon's valuation gap?

What Does This Setup Signal About Sentiment

The correction created an interesting opportunity: despite valid bearish arguments, the average analyst price target of $313.07 suggests excellent upside potential with manageable downside risk. Is AWS growth strong enough to carry Amazon past earnings and AI capex anxiety from a low base for patient investors to evaluate?

Options markets price a nearly 7% post-earnings move, which is higher than the average 6% move over the past four quarters. Call volume is clustered around the $240 and $250 strikes for the August expirations, and open interest is building faster on the call side than on the put side.
