Earnings season is when a quarter's worth of uncertainty gets resolved in a single report, and the reaction often has very little to do with how good or bad the numbers actually were. A company can beat every estimate on the sheet and still fall double digits the next morning, because the market was already pricing in something even better. Understanding that gap between expectations and results is the real skill in trading earnings season, not predicting the number itself.

Why the reaction rarely matches the headline

Stock prices move on surprise, not on absolute performance. If analysts expect a company to grow revenue 15% and it grows 14%, that's technically still strong growth, but the stock can fall hard because it missed what was priced in. The opposite happens too: a company can report a genuine miss and still rally, if the miss was smaller than the market feared, or if forward guidance suggests the worst is behind it.

This is why "beat and miss" headlines can be so misleading on their own. A beat on earnings per share paired with weak guidance for the next quarter often moves a stock more than the headline number does. Traders who only look at whether a company beat or missed, without checking what management said about the quarter ahead, are missing the part of the report that usually matters most.

Earnings reactions depend on more than the headline numbers. Forward guidance and management commentary can have the biggest influence on what happens next.

Gaps: The part of earnings trading most people underestimate

Because earnings are typically released outside regular trading hours, before the market opens or after it closes, the market's first reaction shows up as a gap: the stock opens at a meaningfully different price than where it closed the day before, with no trading in between to smooth the move.

An overnight earnings gap can jump straight through a stop-loss level, meaning the position may be closed at a very different price from the one originally set.

This is important for risk management specifically. A stop loss order placed inside a normal trading session may fill near the trigger price in normal market conditions. A stop loss sitting through an earnings gap can fill far worse, because the price simply jumps past it with no liquidity available at the level in between. A trader holding a position into an earnings report needs to understand that a 10% stop loss can turn into a 20% loss overnight if the gap is large enough, something that doesn't happen in normal trading conditions.

Volatility doesn't end on report day

The initial reaction is usually the sharpest move, but volatility around earnings often extends for several sessions afterward, as analysts revise their models, institutional investors adjust positions, and the market digests management's commentary on the earnings call. A stock can gap one direction at the open and then reverse entirely by the close, once the market has had time to properly parse what was said versus what was simply reacted to in the first few minutes.

This is particularly true for companies where the earnings call itself carries more weight than the numbers, with technology and AI-linked names being a common example, where a single comment on spending plans or demand trends can move the stock more than the quarter's actual results.

A practical approach to risk around earnings

The starting point is deciding, before the report, whether to hold a position through it at all. Holding onto earnings is a speculation on the surprise, not the company, and that's a different kind of trade than a normal technical or fundamental position. Reducing position size ahead of a report, or exiting entirely and re-entering after the gap has settled, could be a reasonable approach for traders who don't want exposure to that specific outcome.

Holding through earnings means accepting the full gap risk. Reducing exposure beforehand gives traders the option to reassess once the initial reaction has settled.

For those who do want exposure, planning for an adverse gap before the report is essential. That means setting a position size that accounts for a potentially larger-than-expected move, not just the size that would be appropriate in normal trading conditions.

How to trade earnings season with PrimeXBT

PrimeXBT is a global multi-asset broker that offers CFDs on a range of major shares, including names like Apple, Tesla, Meta, Amazon, NVIDIA, Netflix and AMD, on its PXTrader 2.0 platform. Traders can take long or short positions around these companies' earnings reports, whether they choose to position before the announcement or assess how the reaction develops afterwards.

Risk management remains important whichever approach a trader chooses. Traders can set a stop loss and take profit before a report to plan exits in advance, although stop-loss orders do not guarantee execution at the requested price through a gap. Adjustable leverage gives traders control over their margin requirements, while choosing a smaller position size reduces the impact of an adverse price move.

PXTrader 2.0 also allows traders to choose how margin and positions work. Cross margin uses the available account balance to support open positions, while isolated margin limits a position’s risk to the margin set aside for it, so a bad move in one share does not affect the rest of the account. Netting mode combines trades on the same instrument into one position, while hedge mode allows a long and a short position on the same instrument at the same time, which can be used to offset a position through a report without closing it. Negative balance protection ensures traders cannot lose more than the funds in their trading account.

Trading costs also matter when reducing exposure ahead of a report or re-entering after the initial reaction. PrimeXBT offers competitive spreads on shares and commission-free CFD trading, alongside spreads from 0.4 points on the US500 and 0.8 points on the USTEC for traders following the broader market reaction. Its five-tier VIP program offers further reductions of up to 25% on Forex and CFD spreads for high volume traders.

New clients automatically receive VIP4 tier status for their first 14 days, with up to 15% off Forex and CFD spreads, including shares and indices. This gives traders joining during earnings season access to lower costs from the outset, without first meeting the usual VIP trading-volume requirements.

TradingView charts, built directly into the platform with more than 100 indicators, let traders track how a stock is actually behaving in the sessions following a report, not just where it opened, which is good to know given how often an initial gap reverses once the market has had time to properly digest the call.

The bottom line

Trading earnings season means separating the number from the reaction. A beat isn't automatically bullish, a miss isn't automatically bearish. Managing that risk before the report, rather than reacting to it after the fact, is what turns earnings season from a guess into a trade with defined parameters.
