Trading Support and Resistance - 27 June 2016

This week we’ll begin with our monthly and weekly forecasts of the currency pairs worth watching. The first part of our forecast is based upon our research of the past 11 years of Forex prices, which show that the following methodologies have all produced profitable results:

Let’s take a look at the relevant data of currency price changes and interest rates to date, which we compiled using a trade-weighted index of the major global currencies:

Chart 1

Monthly Forecast June 2016

This month, we forecasted that the best movements will be short USD/JPY, and long EUR/USD. The performance so far is very positive:

Chart 2

Weekly Forecast 26th June 2016

Last week, we made no forecast.

This week, we again make no forecast, as there were no strong counter-trend movements.

This week has been dominated by weakness in the British Pound, and strength in the Japanese Yen and U.S. Dollar. There is a “safety” sentiment in the market and the Brexit vote had a great impact.

Volatility was much greater than it was last week, with two thirds of the major and minor currency pairs changing in value by more than 1%. Volatility is likely to be less over this coming week, which will be dominated by the aftermath of the British vote to leave the European Union.

Key Support/Resistance Levels for Popular Pairs

At the FX Academy, we teach that trades should be entered and exited at or very close to key support and resistance levels. There are certain key support and resistance levels that should be watched on the more popular currency pairs this week, which might result in either reversals or breakouts:

chart 3

Let’s see how trading two of these key pairs last week off key support and resistance levels could have worked out:

AUD/USD

We had expected the level at both 0.7309 might act as support, as it had acted previously as both support and resistance. Note how these “flipping” levels can work really well. The H1 chart below shows the price made double inside candles rejecting this level following the determination of the Brexit vote last Friday late in the Asian session, before rising very strongly. Note how the trade was quickly in profit, which is always a good sign that it is more likely to turn out well. The trade really took off, and has made a maximum reward to risk ratio of approximately 2.5 to 1 if the stop had been placed just below the swing low.

AUDUSD

USD/CAD

We had expected the level at 1.2752 might act as support, as it had acted previously as both support and resistance and is also a key psychological number. Note how these “flipping” levels can work really well. The H1 chart below shows how the price fell to this level and rejected it with a bullish engulfing candle marked by the up arrow in the chart below. This would have produced a maximum reward to risk ratio of less than 1 to 1 if the stop had been placed just below the swing low, so it was not a very successful trade.
