Forex Today: Betting Markets Forecast Narrow Trump Victory

Betting markets giving Trump 58% chance of victory at midnight Eastern Time.

  • Vote counting is underway in the U.S. presidential election, with President Trump seemingly performing better than opinion polling had forecasted. Joe Biden seems to have flipped Arizona, but President Trump looks to have won Florida by a margin of greater than 3%, and held Texas quite comfortably.
  • The outcome of the election is essentially too close to call, with most of the swing states having enough votes to count remaining for the outlook to change very quickly and strongly. Republicans are becoming more confident of victory in Michigan, while the New York Times is currently showing Georgia leaning to Biden.
  • Betting markets are forecasting extremely narrow victories for Trump in Michigan and Pennsylvania.
  • Stock markets and the U.S. Dollar are strengthening, while the Euro seems to be the weakest major currency, with the EUR/USD currency pair trading at a new 3-month low price in the past few hours.
  • New Zealand employment data came in slightly worse than expected.
  • Last Friday saw 573,800 confirmed new coronavirus cases diagnosed worldwide – a record high. Recent days have seen over 200,000 new cases confirmed daily in Europe alone.
  • Coronavirus daily global death tolls are rising sharply, with deaths in Latin America and the Caribbean continuing to fall, while the U.S.A. accounts for about 18% of the global total, and Europe 37%.
  • The European Union is now seeing more new coronavirus cases and deaths than any other area, with a short-term average of over 220,000 new cases daily. The death rate there is exceeding that in the U.S.A quite strongly. New cases and deaths are also rising strongly in the U.K.
  • Total confirmed new coronavirus cases stand at over 47.4 million with an average case fatality rate of 2.56%.
  • India has more than 8.3 million confirmed coronavirus cases, more than any other nation except the U.S.A. which has confirmed more than 9.3 million cases. The U.S.A. is the single country with the highest daily death toll, reporting more than 1,200 deaths yesterday, although the Eurozone is exceeding that number overall.
