The Prime Minister recently announced his steps to reopen the country from the lockdowns and quarantines but health officials are wary that the moves may be premature in light of the threat of the second wave.

As of 11:07 am in London trade, the GBP/USD was trading higher at $1.2442, a gain of 0.1674%; the pair has ranged from a session high of $1.24654 to a low of $1.24034. The EUR/GBP was lower at 0.9021 Pence, a loss of 0.3645%, and off the session trough of 0.90197 Pence. The GBP/JPY was higher at 133.3320 Yen, up 0.2738%.

US Labor Data and GDP in Focus

Market attention will likely shift back to the US later today with the release of the most recent labor data. The US Labor Department will report on new and continuing claims for unemployment benefits for the week ended June 12th. A recent poll shows that analysts still believe the numbers will have only improved marginally, despite the reopening of some states. Also to be released later today is first quarter GDP figures, with experts predicting -5% on an annualized basis.
