Editor’s Verdict

I've been familiar with NinjaTrader known for years as a slick platform day-traders liked, but the business behind it has changed more in the last twelve months than in the previous decade. Kraken bought it outright in May 2025 for around $1.5bn, and the newly formed brokerage now trades as Kraken Derivatives US alongside the NinjaTrader and Tradovate names. Strip away the new ownership and the core is the same: a US futures and options-on-futures specialist, CFTC-registered, NFA member, with client money held in segregated accounts. That puts it in a different regulatory league from most of the offshore shops I review. On cost, the plan structure rewards activity. Pay nothing, and you're at $0.39 per micro trade half turn; pay $99 a month and it drops to $0.29; buy the $1,499 lifetime licence, and it's $0.09, plus exchange and NFA pass-through fees either way.

There's no minimum deposit, and the simulated-trading environment is genuinely free and unlimited. The honest counterweights: it's futures and options only, so no spot Forex, shares, ETFs or spot crypto through the brokerage itself; pricing and margin are USD-centric; and there's no FCA cover, so international clients trade without local compensation. One thing every prospective client should know before opening an account is that the NFA fined NinjaTrader Clearing $250,000 in May 2025 over anti-money-laundering and supervision failures. It changes nothing about fund segregation, but it belongs in any honest write-up. For an active US futures trader who wants a serious platform and top-tier custody, this is comfortably one of the strongest brokers.

NinjaTrader does one thing and does it properly. It's a futures broker and trading platform built for active traders who live in the order book, not a do-everything app trying to cover shares, crypto and Forex in one login. Founded in Chicago in 2003 by Raymond Deux, it has grown to more than 1.9 million users and now sits under crypto giant Kraken, which completed its acquisition in May 2025.

If you trade the E-mini S&P, crude oil, gold or the micros, this is squarely your territory. The platform is fast, the charting is deep, and the simulation mode lets you test strategies and automated systems without risking a cent. What you won't find here is a huge offering across asset classes. There's no spot Forex through the brokerage, no shares, no ETFs and no spot crypto. NinjaTrader has chosen to focus as a futures specialist.

The bigger story is custody. As a CFTC-registered Futures Commission Merchant and NFA member, NinjaTrader holds client money in segregated accounts and publishes daily segregated-funds statements. That's a level of transparency you rarely see from the offshore brokers that dominate the retail space.

NinjaTrader Core Takeaways:

  • Pricing: Three plans. Free at $0.39 per micro side, $99/month at $0.29, and a $1,499 lifetime licence at $0.09, plus exchange and NFA fees.
  • Safety: CFTC-registered FCM, NFA member ID 0309379, client funds segregated with daily public statements.
  • Platforms: Proprietary NinjaTrader Desktop, Web and Mobile, plus free unlimited simulated trading and C# automation.
  • Cost structure: Commissions scale down the more you pay up front, so the right plan depends entirely on your monthly volume.
  • Asset range: Futures and options on futures across CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX. Nothing outside that.

NinjaTrader Regulation & Safety

Regulation matters most when something goes wrong, and NinjaTrader's structure now runs through a single CFTC-registered entity that also trades as Kraken Derivatives US and Tradovate, so it's worth understanding who holds your money.

Is NinjaTrader Legit and Safe?

Yes. NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC is registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a Futures Commission Merchant and is a member of the National Futures Association under ID 0309379. The same entity does business as NinjaTrader, Kraken Derivatives US and Tradovate. Client funds are held in segregated accounts, and the firm publishes daily segregated-funds statements, which is about as transparent as custody reporting gets in this industry.

One detail on the setup: NinjaTrader doesn't have direct clearing privileges at a clearing house. It clears through two established ‘Futures Merchants’, Dorman Trading and Advantage Futures. That's a normal arrangement for a broker of this size and nothing to be concerned about.

There's a mark on the record that any fair review has to include. In November 2024 the NFA brought a case against NinjaTrader Clearing and its president over anti-money-laundering and supervision failures, including opening more than 475 accounts for customers in countries on the firm's own restricted list. It settled in May 2025 with a $250,000 fine, with no admission or denial of the allegations. No client funds were affected. It's a compliance and supervision failing rather than a solvency or custody problem, but you should know it happened before you open an account.

Kraken's ownership, finalised in May 2025 at around $1.5bn, brings a large, well-capitalised parent into the picture. The flip side for anyone outside the US is that this is a US-regulated broker. It accepts international clients, but you trade without FCA oversight and without FSCS protection. If local compensation cover is a deal-breaker for you, that's the line that matters.

There is now a regional exception. In January 2026 NinjaTrader launched a separately regulated EU arm through Payward Europe Digital Solutions (CY) Limited, a CySEC-authorised MiFID firm trading as NinjaTrader, starting in the Netherlands and Germany with wider EU rollout planned. Clients in those EU markets deal with that locally regulated entity rather than the US one; UK and other non-EU clients are still served from the US entity, so the no-local-cover point applies to them.

Noteworthy: top-tier US custody with daily segregated-funds reporting, set against a 2025 AML fine and no local protection for international clients. One regulatory data source also shows a pending-withdrawal marker on the NFA record, which may be administrative given the Kraken restructuring; confirm directly on NFA BASIC before relying on it.

Who Should Trade with NinjaTrader?

This is a specialist's broker. The further you are from active US futures trading, the less it fits.

NinjaTrader's pricing rewards volume. You pick a plan, and the more you pay up front, the lower your per-contract commission.

Rather than charging through spreads, NinjaTrader charges a ticket commission per contract per side, and that rate depends on which of three plans you're on. All plans give you the same platform, the same data, etc. The only thing that changes is the commission and the up-front cost.

My Observation: the plan only pays for itself if you trade enough to recoup the up-front cost. On standard contracts the monthly plan saves $0.30 per side versus free, so $0.60 round turn. To justify the $99, you'd need around 165 round turns a month, roughly 8 a day. The lifetime licence saves $0.70 per side versus free on standards, $1.40 round turn, so it pays back after about 1,070 round turns. For a serious daily trader, that's a few months; for an occasional one, stay on free.

Noteworthy:

  • Inactivity fee: $35, charged on free-plan accounts that log into the live environment but place no trades within a 30-day period
  • Exchange & NFA fees: Roughly $0.19 per contract in exchange fees plus NFA and data-routing charges (Rithmic or CQG), passed straight through on every plan
  • Overnight financing: None in the Forex sense; futures have no swap charge (see Overnight Swaps below)
  • Withdrawal fee: Bank wires cost around $30; ACH is cheaper

Overnight Swaps

Futures don't carry overnight swap or financing charges the way spot Forex and CFDs do. Therefore, no rollover interest debited or credited each night, because a futures contract already prices in the cost of carry through to its contract expiry. So, if you're coming from an FX or CFD broker, the swap line you're used to scrutinising simply isn't there.

Two things take its place. The first is margin. NinjaTrader sets low intraday day-trading margins, but once you hold a position past the session close, the full exchange-set overnight initial and maintenance margin applies. That can be many times the intraday figure, so holding overnight ties up materially more capital. The second is the contract roll. Each future has an expiry, and to maintain exposure you close the expiring contract and open the next one, paying commission and crossing the spread on both legs each time you roll.

Holding a position overnight, what changes:

  • No swap debit or credit, unlike Forex or CFDs
  • Overnight margin jumps to the full exchange requirement, well above the intraday rate
  • At each contract expiry you pay commission and spread to roll into the next month

NinjaTrader covers futures and options on futures, and that's the whole list. Within that universe the choice is wide: equity index futures like the E-mini and Micro E-mini S&P 500 and Nasdaq, energy contracts such as crude and natural gas, metals including gold and silver, interest-rate products, agricultural contracts, FX futures and crypto futures, all across the main US exchanges.

What's missing is everything outside futures. There are no real shares, no ETFs, no bonds and no spot crypto through the brokerage. Spot Forex is only accessible if you connect the NinjaTrader platform to a separate FX broker; the NinjaTrader brokerage itself doesn't offer it. If you want a single account spanning multiple asset classes, this isn't it.

NinjaTrader Leverage

Leverage in futures works through exchange margin, not a leverage ratio you select. Each contract has a set margin requirement, and NinjaTrader splits that into a low intraday rate and the full exchange rate for positions held overnight.

Intraday, the firm advertises micro-contract margins from as little as $50, with E-mini contracts typically in the $500 to $1,000 range depending on the product. Those numbers are deliberately low to suit active day traders. Hold past the close and the full exchange-set overnight margin kicks in, which is considerably higher.

  • Intraday micro margin: from $50
  • Intraday E-mini margin: roughly $500 to $1,000, contract-dependent
  • Overnight margin: the full exchange initial and maintenance requirement

What should traders know about NinjaTrader leverage?

  • Magnified risk: Low intraday margin means a small adverse move can wipe out a large share of your account
  • Capital efficiency: Micro contracts let you size positions precisely and trade with modest capital
  • Overnight step-up: Budget for the full exchange margin if you intend to hold past the session close

Account Types

There's refreshingly little to decide here. You open one futures trading account and then choose your commission plan. The account is the same across Free, Monthly and Lifetime; the plan only sets your per-contract cost and the up-front fee.

  • Live futures account: A single account type for trading futures and options on futures, in USD
  • Simulation account: Free, unlimited paper trading with real-time and historical data, available before and alongside a live account

For most, it could be a good idea to open the free plan and the simulation account first. Trade your actual strategy at real commission rates for a month, count your round turns, and only then decide whether the monthly or lifetime plan saves you money. Don't pay up front for volume you haven't proven yet.

NinjaTrader Demo Account

The simulation environment is one of NinjaTrader's strongest selling points, and it's genuinely free with no time limit. You get the full desktop platform, real-time and historical market data, and the same order types and charting you'd use live.

It's particularly useful for two jobs: learning the platform's depth-of-market and order-flow tools before you risk capital, and testing NinjaScript automated strategies against live and historical data. Most brokers cap demo access at 30 days. NinjaTrader doesn't, which I really like.

NinjaTrader is proprietary all the way. You won't find MetaTrader or cTrader here; the platform is the product, and it's been refined over two decades for futures traders specifically.

  • NinjaTrader Desktop: The flagship. Advanced charting, the Market Analyzer, order-flow and depth-of-market tools, and full C# automation through NinjaScript
  • NinjaTrader Web: A browser-based version for trading without a local install
  • NinjaTrader Mobile: iOS and Android apps for managing positions on the move

Supporting Infrastructure:

  • Automation: NinjaScript lets you build, back test and run automated strategies in C#
  • Data routing: Connectivity through Rithmic and CQG
  • Charting integration: TradingView charts are supported for analysis, though the native platform remains the brokerage main front end

What I Would Like NinjaTrader to Add

Two things would round this out. First, the obvious one given the new owner: native spot crypto. Kraken bought the business in part to bridge traditional and crypto markets, and traders will reasonably expect spot crypto inside the NinjaTrader account before long. It isn't there yet. Second, a non-USD account option and clearer international onboarding would help the growing base of clients outside the US, who currently deal with a USD-centric, US-regulated setup without any local regulation.

Research & Education

NinjaTrader's strength on the learning side is the platform itself. The free, unlimited demo account is the best teacher it offers, and there's a detailed help centre, an active user community and a large library of third-party NinjaScript add-ons and indicators built up over the platform's long life.

Where it's thinner is in formal market research. You won't get the daily analyst notes, economic-calendar commentary or structured trading academy that some larger brokers bundle in. For an experienced futures trader that's no loss. For a newer trader, you'll be leaning on the community and outside sources to fill the gap.

NinjaTrader has been named BrokerChooser's Best Futures Broker for both 2025 and 2026, and the firm itself markets a longer run of recognition. Take the award as a credible third-party signal on the overall offering rather than a verdict on support alone.

Bonuses and Promotions

Don't come here for deposit bonuses. As a US-regulated futures broker, NinjaTrader doesn't run the cash-bonus promotions common among offshore CFD providers, and that's a mark in its favour on the compliance side. What it does run periodically are discounts on the lifetime licence and platform fees, plus an affiliate and partner programme. Check the current pricing page for any live offer before you buy a plan.

Opening an Account

Opening an account is straightforward, and there's no deposit hurdle to clear before you start.

What should traders know about the NinjaTrader account opening process?

  1. Register: complete the online application with your personal and financial details
  2. Verify: pass identity and KYC checks, standard for a CFTC-regulated FCM
  3. Fund & Trade: add funds by wire, ACH or debit card and start trading, or run the free simulator while you wait

Accounts are denominated in USD only, so non-US clients should factor in currency conversion when funding and withdrawing.

Minimum Deposit

There isn't one. NinjaTrader's pricing page is explicit that no deposit minimum is required to open an account. You'll see older third-party reviews citing a $1,000 figure; that's out of date. In practice you need enough to meet the intraday margin on whatever you trade, which for micros can be as little as $50 a contract, but there's no formal account-opening minimum.

Payment Methods

Withdrawal options
  • Wire Transfer
    Other
  • Deposit options
  • Wire Transfer
    Debit Cards

  • Funding options are US-centric, in keeping with the broker's base.

Deposits: bank wire, ACH transfer, debit card (US accounts) and cheque. All in USD.

Withdrawals: bank wire, which carries a fee of around $30, and ACH. Processing times are typical for US bank rails, with ACH usually clearing in two business days.

    Accepted Countries

NinjaTrader is a US broker and serves US-resident clients foremost. It does accept international clients, including from the UK, but always from the US-regulated entity, so you trade under CFTC and NFA rules rather than any local regime. US residents on its own restricted list, and clients in sanctioned jurisdictions, are excluded. If you're outside the US, confirm eligibility for your specific country directly with NinjaTrader before applying, since the firm's restricted list is the same one that featured in its 2024 NFA case.

EU residents are increasingly a separate case. Since January 2026 NinjaTrader has offered a CySEC-regulated EU service via Payward Europe Digital Solutions (CY) Limited, live first in the Netherlands and Germany and expanding across the EU. UK clients are not covered by that entity and continue to trade through the US-regulated brokerage.

    Deposits and Withdrawals

    • Segregated funds: Client money is held in segregated accounts with daily public seg-fund statements
    • Wire fee: Around $30 on outbound bank wires; ACH is cheaper
    • Speed: ACH typically clears in a few US business days
    • Currency: USD only, so expect conversion costs if your bank account is in another currency

    Is NinjaTrader a Good Broker?

For its intended user, yes, and comfortably so. If you're an active US futures or options trader, you get a fast, deep, proven platform, low intraday margins, commissions that fall to $0.09 per micro side on the lifetime plan, and custody standards that most retail brokers can't match. The free unlimited simulator is a genuine asset for testing and learning. Under Kraken's ownership it now has a large, well-capitalised parent behind it.

The qualifications are real and you should weigh them. The product set is narrow by design, so it's the wrong choice if you want shares, ETFs, spot Forex or spot crypto in one account. It's USD-centric and offers no FCA cover or FSCS protection for international clients. And the $250,000 NFA fine in May 2025 shows the compliance function has had failings, even if client funds were never at risk.

if you trade US futures actively and value a serious platform with top-tier custody, NinjaTrader is one of the strongest brokers in this space and earns its 3.9. If you want breadth across asset classes, local regulatory protection, or a non-USD account, look elsewhere. Pick the right plan for your volume, start on free, and prove your activity before paying up front.

    FAQs

What is the difference between the Free, Monthly and Lifetime plans?

    expand.png

The platform and data are identical. The plans differ on commission and up-front cost: Free is $0 with the highest per-contract rates, Monthly is $99 with mid rates, and Lifetime is a one-off $1,499 with the lowest rates. The right plan depends on your trading volume.

Does NinjaTrader charge an inactivity fee?

Leverage is set by exchange margin, not a fixed ratio. Intraday micro margins start from $50 per contract, with the full exchange margin applying to overnight positions.

Is NinjaTrader available to US residents?

    expand.png

Yes, it is a US broker and US clients are its primary market, subject to its own restricted list.
