The best MT5 brokers in South Africa differ significantly in their MT5 market range, execution, trading costs and regulatory setup, so I compared each broker on the features that matter most to local traders.
For example, a broker that advertises thousands of markets may offer only a few hundred on MT5. Therefore, I checked each broker’s MT5 build and compared execution models. I also measured order execution, where disclosed, and accounted for trading costs. Finally, I checked all the FSCA claims against the regulator’s official register. The best MT5 broker for you will depend on your strategy. XM and AvaTrade are the only two that offer ZAR as a base currency, while CFI requires no minimum deposit. FP Markets and Pepperstone add MT5 plugin suites to upgrade their trading platforms. Meanwhile, VT Markets has the fastest measured execution, and PU Prime offers MT5 on every account type from $20. Capital.com pairs MT5 with its own proprietary platform.
About This Review
I selected these MT5 brokers based on the needs of South African traders, focusing specifically on each broker’s MT5 offering rather than its full product range.

Important Risk Warning
70% to 89% of retail investors lose money when trading CFDs and MT5’s automated execution does not improve the odds.
Why We Chose These Eight Brokers
This page ranks eight DailyForex partners with strong MetaTrader 5 propositions for South African traders.
Seven brokers have FSCA authorization: FP Markets under FSP 50926, CFI under 53711, XM ZA under 49976, VT Markets under 50865, PU Prime under 52218, AvaTrade under 45984, and Capital.com under 55488. Four of the seven state in their own documents that the South African entity is an intermediary rather than the counterparty to your trades.
Pepperstone is also on the list because its MT5 environment is among the most competitive. It has no FSCA authorization, but Pepperstone Markets Kenya Limited serves African clients under CMA license 128.

South African MT5 Market Exposure
These brokers offer South African exposure mainly through CFDs, not actual JSE-listed shares. CFI offers the SA40 and three ZAR pairs, while XM and FP Markets each offer two ZAR pairs.
Why MT5 Is Not Just 'MT4 But Newer'
The structure of MT5 differs from that of MT4 in a way that is important for South African traders in relation to the way they use the platform - it's not merely a version number upgrade.
- Netting and hedging modes: MT5 supports both accounting systems, whereas MT4 supports only hedging. The broker sets which one your account uses. Netting holds one position per instrument, which suits traders running a single ZAR-pair exposure rather than opposing trades.
- 21 timeframes on desktop (against MT4's 9): MT5 offers far more granular chart analysis. It covers both fast intraday ZAR moves and longer-term trend context. Both platforms drop to
- Built-in virtual hosting: MT5 has a VPS, reached from inside the platform, for which MT4 has no equivalent. It keeps an Expert Advisor running through a load-shedding outage with the computer switched off.
- Market depth: MT5 shows the depth your broker feeds, rather than the top price alone. This gives a view of liquidity around SARB announcements that MT4 does not display at all.
- 38 built-in indicators and 44 analytical objects: MT5 provides more native analysis tools than MT4's 30 indicators and 31 analytical objects. This means less reliance on third-party add-ons.
- Partial order filling policies: MT5 offers Fill-or-Kill, Immediate-or-Cancel, and Return, whereas MT4 fills in full or not at all. This controls what happens to the remainder when a large ZAR-pair order cannot fill at one price.
MT5’s Economic Calendar and SARB Announcements
The economic calendar built into MT5 is displayed over the chart and can be filtered according to country and the importance of the event; it includes coverage of South Africa, with specific entries for the SARB's interest rate decision, the prime rate, M3 money supply, and the quarterly bulletin.
The Monetary Policy Committee gives its announcements six times each year at 15:00 SAST, a time that corresponds with the beginning of the overlap between London and New York.
The announcements can have a significant impact on the market. For example, on 23 July 2026 the committee decided to keep the repo rate the same, going against the expectation that it would be increased, and as a result the ZAR declined by about 3% so that it moved from R16.40 to R16.82 and temporarily reached R16.98.
When the calendar is filtered to show only South African events, the entry for the announcement appears on the chart rather than in a separate browser tab.
Load-Shedding and MT5 Session Interruptions
Power outages during evening sessions disconnect the MT5 terminal from the broker's server. Chart history is not lost, since MT5 backfills missing bars upon reconnection, but any Expert Advisor stops running, and open positions remain unmanaged until the connection returns.
The MT5-Specific Reason VPS Matters Here
MT5 includes built-in Virtual Hosting, accessible within the platform, which keeps the terminal running even when the computer is switched off. FP Markets, XM, VT Markets, and Pepperstone also offer VPS hosting, each having its own volume or balance requirements. Either route keeps positions managed through an outage, which matters more during a fast SARB-driven ZAR move than at any other point in the South African trading day.
FSCA Regulation for MT5 Brokers: The Full Picture
The FSCA regulates forex CFDs under the FAIS Act of 2002, and since 2018 firms writing Over-the-Counter (OTC) derivatives have also needed OTC Derivative Provider authorization under the Financial Markets Act. The FSCA itself was created in April 2018, when the Financial Services Board was dissolved. Retail traders do not need a license to trade their own funds, but brokers must be FSCA-authorized to solicit clients in South Africa.
Regulatory Tier | Meaning for MT5 Traders | Relevant Here |
|---|---|---|
FSCA-licensed local entity | Direct South African regulatory accountability with a verifiable FSP number | FP Markets 50926; AvaTrade 45984; Capital.com 55488, which also holds ODP approval |
FSCA-regulated intermediary structure | Local FSCA-regulated intermediary- the derivative supplier is a separate entity | CFI 53711; XM ZA 49976; VT Markets 50865; PU Prime 52218 |

The FSCA offers local regulatory oversight but no broker-failure compensation scheme like the UK's FSCS.

ZAR Accounts on MT5 – What Is Actually Available
The base currency used with MT5 varies according to the broker. Many Forex traders prefer USD, as the margin calculations, the way profit and loss is displayed, and the netting or hedging accounting all take place in the account's base currency.
XM and AvaTrade offer ZAR as a base currency. Therefore, deposits, trades and withdrawals stay in ZAR with no conversion at either end. PU Prime publishes nine base currencies, but ZAR is not among them. Capital.com applies a 0.7% conversion markup built into its exchange rate, the only published conversion figure on this list.
Base Currency Precedent Worth Knowing
Availability is not permanent. For example, IG Markets South Africa stopped offering its onshore ZAR-denominated accounts in May 2025 and clients had to close out their open positions by 28 July of that year. Although South Africans can still trade via IG's offshore entities, ZAR is not available on those entities.
Local Payment Methods for Funding Your MT5 Account
Method | How It Works | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Ozow | Instant EFT, authorized through your own bank login | Supports 9 South African banks, cards PayShap & BNPL |
PayFast | Cards, Instant EFT and QR payments | Broad, established South African payment gateway. |
PayShap | Real-time interbank payments using a ShapID, usually your cellphone number | Available 24/7 across 12 banks, backed by BankservAfrica and the SARB |
The eight brokers listed on this page do not offer instant EFT via Ozow, PayFast or PayShap. They accept funding by means of EFT, bank wire, cards and e-wallets. XM covers the transaction fees for cards, e-wallets and bank wires when the amount exceeds $200, whereas VT Markets and PU Prime make the first wire withdrawal each month free and charge about $20 thereafter.
CFDs and Leverage on MT5 - What South Africa Actually Allows
MT5-leveraged products primarily include Forex and CFDs. You do not own the underlying asset, but you speculate on price movement using leverage. MT5 shows the leverage on your account and calculates the margin accordingly, while the broker sets the ratio.
The FSCA does not impose a fixed retail leverage cap. In comparison, ASIC in Australia limits major currency pairs to 30:1 and applies lower caps to minors, gold, indices, commodities and shares. Therefore, maximum leverage differs significantly among the brokers on this page, from 1:30 at Capital.com to 1:1,000 at XM and PU Prime.
- FP Markets: 1:500
- CFI: 1:500
- AvaTrade: 1:400
- Capital.com: 1:30 on majors, stepping down to 5:1 on shares
- XM: 1:1,000
- VT Markets: 1:500
- PU Prime: 1:1,000
- Pepperstone: 1:400 under the Kenya entity
Non-Trading Fees - The Costs Beyond Spread and Commission
Trading costs (spread, commission) get most of the attention, but non-trading fees - inactivity, withdrawal, deposit - can erode returns just as much, especially for smaller South African accounts.
Broker | Inactivity Fee | Withdrawal Fee | Deposit Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
FP Markets | No | No | No |
CFI | After 11 months | No | No |
AvaTrade | $50 quarterly, $100 at 12 months | No | No |
Capital.com | No | No | No |
XM | $10 monthly after 90 days | Only wires under $200 carry a charge | No |
VT Markets | No | First monthly wire free, then approx. $20 | No |
PU Prime | No | First monthly wire free, then $20 | No |
Pepperstone | No | No | No |
There is an extra charge for currency conversion. Capital.com includes a 0.7% markup in its exchange rate. PU Prime performs the conversion using rates it does not publish. The remaining six firms do not publish their conversion rates.
The Cost Gap
Non-trading fees (inactivity, deposit and withdrawal) depend on the broker. Verify directly before registering, since these can have a significant impact, particularly for smaller accounts.
Platform Costs: Standard vs Raw MT5 Accounts
Although the MT5 platform is free, the type of account linked to it significantly affects your actual trading costs.
Cost | Standard Account | Raw/ECN Account |
|---|---|---|
Spread EUR/USD | 0.4-1.3 pips typical | 0.0-0.1 pips + commission |
Commission | None | $1.00-$3.50 per side depending on broker |
Best suited for | Casual traders, lower volume | Active traders, scalpers, higher volume |
As an example, we can look at a standard EUR/USD lot on a Raw MT5 account with Pepperstone - the spread is near 0.0 pips (about $0), plus a commission of about $3.50 per side, which comes to approximately $7.00 per round lot.
Best Trading Hours on MT5 for South Africa (SAST)
South Africa follows the SAST time zone (UTC+2) and does not observe daylight saving time, which means the clocks remain unchanged while those in London and New York move twice each year. The period when London and New York are in the same time zone is approximately from 15:00 to 19:00 SAST in northern summer and from 16:00 to 20:00 in northern winter.
MT5 charts run on the broker's server time, which cannot be changed within the terminal. Most servers run GMT+2 in winter and GMT+3 in summer, so chart times match SAST in northern winter and run an hour ahead in northern summer.
SARS Tax Treatment and MT5's Trade History Export
In South Africa, profits from forex and CFD trading are subject to tax, and residents must declare them regardless of whether the broker is based locally or offshore. For most active retail traders, such profits are treated as income and taxed at marginal rates ranging from 18% to 45%.
Capital gains treatment is rare in the case of CFDs since these instruments do not have a Section 9C safe harbor, meaning that merely holding a position for a longer period does not alter its classification. Traders must report profits on the annual ITR12 form, and those whose income is not deducted through PAYE may need to register as provisional taxpayers and file IRP6 returns in August and February. The foreign-currency amounts are converted into ZAR using the rates published by SARS.
The MT5 system provides detailed account statements and trade history directly from the terminal, including all records that SARS requires for record-keeping, regardless of the treatment applied.
Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.

Common Mistakes South African MT5 Traders Make
- Checking economic news separately instead of using MT5's built-in calendar - it covers South Africa, with dedicated SARB interest rate and prime rate entries
- Waiting until load-shedding interrupts an open position before setting up hosting - MT5 includes built-in Virtual Hosting, and four brokers here offer their own VPS
- Assuming a broker offers ZAR accounts or local payment support – this requires confirmation. For example, on this list, only XM and AvaTrade hold accounts in ZAR, and none of the eight publishes Ozow, PayFast or PayShap support
- Opening an account without checking which accounting mode it uses - the broker sets netting or hedging, and traders cannot switch it in the terminal
- Assuming JSE or ALSI exposure is included because MT5 supports multi-asset trading – this is often not the case and needs verification
Bottom Line
For South African traders, the MT5 decision turns on what a broker actually offers on the platform rather than what the group advertises across all of its platforms. It also turns on whether the account is held in ZAR and which entity stands behind it.
FP Markets offers both pricing models on MT5, along with a 12-tool plugin suite. CFI offers the widest asset range, with 15,000+ instruments, and is the only broker here to list SA40. AvaTrade and XM are the only two holding accounts in ZAR, with XM opening at $5 and adding three gold crosses. Meanwhile, Capital.com is the only local entity holding ODP authorization, though its MT5 build is narrower than its own platform. VT Markets records the fastest measured execution at 20 to 40ms, whereas PU Prime puts MT5 on all four tiers from $20, and Pepperstone adds the largest plugin suite at 28 tools and publishes a 99.32% fill rate.
Whichever you choose, the checks are the same: confirm the entity on the FSCA register, compare the MT5 instrument list against the group total, and check whether your account base currency is in ZAR.
