For this 2026 guide, I compared South African brokers by FSCA status, trading costs, account structure and the features that matter most to local traders. The best choice depends on your trading strategy and preferred pricing model. Updated in September 2026.
I verified every broker’s FSCA claim against the regulator’s register, confirmed which entity serves South Africa, and which company supplies derivative products. I also focused on each broker’s spread against the average it delivers on EUR/USD. No single broker is the cheapest option since it depends on the trading strategy. While CFI quotes the tightest commission-free spread, Capital.com retains the simplest single-account pricing. XM and AvaTrade are the only accounts that offer ZAR as a base currency, but FP Markets offers both cost formats across four platforms. VT Markets and PU Prime feature the widest account ladders, and Pepperstone has the deepest platform upgrades.

About This Review

I selected these lowest-spread brokers based on the costs that matter most to South African Forex traders, including advertised and average spreads, commissions, and non-trading fees. Commercial disclosure: DailyForex earns a commission when you open an account through links on this page. This does not affect our ratings. Brokers cannot pay to improve their ranking.

DailyForex has reviewed Forex brokers since 2006 - over 18 years of independent analysis.

Important Risk Warning

70% to 89% of retail CFD trading accounts lose money. Leverage can reach 1:1000 in South Africa, but spreads and commissions still apply to the full trade size, not just the margin required.

Lowest Spread Brokers: 5 Quick Questions

Which broker has the lowest spreads in South Africa?

The broker with the lowest spreads in South Africa depends on the pricing model. On commission-free pricing, CFI quotes EUR/USD from 0.4 pips, and Capital.com averages 0.6 pips. On commission-based pricing, several brokers quote from 0.0 pips, so the deciding factor becomes the round-turn commission rather than the spread itself.

Which broker is strongest for commission-free low-spread trading?

The strongest brokers for commission-free, low-spread trading are CFI and Capital.com. CFI quotes EUR/USD between 0.4 and 1.1 pips with a Dynamic Trader alternative whose commission is volume-based and not published, while Capital.com offers a single spread-only account averaging 0.6 pips with no separate trading commission.

Does XM have an FSCA-regulated South African presence?

XM does have an FSCA-regulated presence in South Africa. XM ZA (Pty) Ltd is authorized by the FSCA under FSP 49976. The derivative products themselves are supplied by XM Global Limited or XM (SC) Limited, so the South African entity acts as an intermediary rather than as your counterparty.

Are Raw spreads always cheaper than Standard spreads?

Raw spreads are not always cheaper than Standard spreads, because Raw accounts add commission. Compare the live spread plus round-turn commission for the pair and trade size you actually use.

Why include Pepperstone on a South African page?

Pepperstone is listed on a South African page because its Razor account offers raw spreads of 0.0 pips on Forex and 0.08 pips on spot gold, with a commission of $3.50 per side. Clients in the region are served by Pepperstone Markets Kenya Limited under CMA license 128.

How We Tested These Low-Spread Brokers

How we tested these low-spread brokers

For this guide, I verified each broker’s FSCA authorization against the regulator’s own register, compared its published spread against the average spread it delivers on EUR/USD, and added the round-turn commission.

  • All-in trading cost: Live and typical spread structure plus commission rather than minimum spread alone.
  • South Africa relevance: FSCA-regulated entity or clearly documented access route, verified against the register.
  • Execution: Published execution speeds and order model, and whether the broker discloses fill rates.
  • Platform support: MT4/MT5, cTrader, TradingView, or proprietary platform.
  • Non-trading costs: Inactivity, withdrawal, conversion, and other costs where applicable.
  • Trader fit: Scalping, day trading, EAs, beginners, and discretionary trading

Real Spread and Cost Comparison

Minimum advertised spreads are only a starting point, so the table below gives both the figure a broker advertises and the average where one has been measured. The gap between those two numbers is the part most comparisons leave out. Live spreads vary with liquidity, session, and volatility, and a raw account’s commission has to be added before traders can compare any of these figures with a spread-only account.

Spread Per Asset Class - Explained

The low-spread number a broker advertises usually refers to a major Forex pair such as EUR/USD. Spreads on gold, indices, cryptocurrencies, and exotic pairs such as USD/ZAR can be materially wider.

Category
Examples
What to Expect
Major Forex
EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY
Tightest spreads; raw pricing starts from 0.0 pips.
Minor Forex
EUR/GBP, AUD/JPY
Wider spreads than majors due to lower liquidity.
Exotic & ZAR pairs
USD/ZAR, EUR/ZAR
Much wider spreads; CFI offers the most ZAR pairs.
Gold
XAU/USD
Competitive raw pricing, with wider Standard spreads.
Indices
NASDAQ 100, S&P 500
Priced in index points rather than Forex pips.
Crypto CFDs
BTC/USD, ETH/USD
Wider and more variable spreads than Forex.

Asset-Specific Spread Examples

  • Minor Forex: Published figures average around 0.7 pips on Raw accounts and 1.7 pips on commission-free accounts, although pricing varies considerably by pair.
  • USD/ZAR: Published spreads typically range from around 75 to 120 pips, materially wider than EUR/USD.
  • Gold: FP Markets quotes gold at 0.10 on Raw versus 0.24 on Standard.
  • Indices: Pepperstone quotes the US 500 from 0.4 points and NASDAQ 100 from 1 point, with no commission on either account.
  • Crypto: FP Markets publishes spreads of 16.44 on BTC/USD, 0.71 on ETH/USD and 0.06 on LTC/USD.

Moderate

Usability, demo access and risk controls matter more initially.

Execution Speed and Slippage

Low spreads do not guarantee low realized cost. During volatile markets, a broker can display a tight spread but fill the order at a worse price, so spread, commission, slippage, and execution matter together. This is especially relevant around SARB decisions and major US data releases, when liquidity can change quickly.

Our testing found average execution of 20 to 40ms at VT Markets, 30ms at Pepperstone, below 40ms at FP Markets, 35 to 50ms at CFI, and 50 to 100ms. at XM, where 99.4% of trades filled in under one second across more than 13.5 billion executions.

What the Spread Difference Actually Costs - A Worked Example

For EUR/USD, one pip on a standard 100,000-unit lot is approximately US$10. At Pepperstone, the Razor account offers raw spreads of 0.0 pips with a commission of US$7.00 per standard round lot, while the Standard account applies a 1-pip markup with no commission. On a 0.2-pip live spread, the Razor account costs about US$9 all-in, compared with about US$10 on Standard. The gap is US$1 per lot, which is 10% of the trading cost, and scales with every position: at 20 standard lots a day, it is US$20, and over a year of active trading, it runs into the thousands.

Why Spread Differences Matter

Compare the actual spread available during the session you trade, then add the full round-turn commission. Minimum advertised spreads are not enough for a real cost ranking.

CFDs and Leverage - How They Connect to Spread Cost

Most Forex and index products discussed here are leveraged CFDs or rolling spot-style derivatives. Leverage does not reduce spread cost: the spread is calculated on the full position size. Higher leverage reduces the margin required to control the position, allowing transaction costs to represent a larger percentage of the cash committed to the trade.

FSCA rules do not impose the retail leverage caps applied by ASIC in Australia, where major currency pairs are limited to 30:1, with lower caps applying to minors, gold, indices, commodities, and shares. Actual maximum leverage depends on broker, product, account structure, and client classification, so compare the terms attached to the South African account rather than a global marketing maximum.

The FSP Number - Not the Whole Story

An FSP number applies to a specific legal entity, not the broker brand as a whole. Match the company named in your account documents with the entity listed on the FSCA register.

FSCA Regulation and Entity Structure

South African traders should check not only whether a broker group has an FSCA license, but which legal entity provides the intermediary service and which company is the derivative product supplier or counterparty. Four brokers on this list state in their own documents that the South African entity is neither the product issuer nor the counterparty.

No Compensation Scheme

FSCA regulation provides local conduct oversight, but it should not be presented as a government-backed guarantee of compensation for trading losses or broker failures.

ZAR Accounts and Currency Conversion

A low spread can be undermined by currency-conversion costs if a South African trader funds in ZAR but trades from a USD-denominated account. XM and AvaTrade both offer ZAR-denominated accounts, so deposits, trades, and withdrawals stay in rand with no conversion at either end. FP Markets accepts ZAR as a deposit currency but holds the account in another base currency, so currency conversion still applies. PU Prime publishes nine base currencies, and ZAR is not included among them. Capital.com applies a 0.7% markup to its exchange rate, the only published conversion figure on this list.

Local Payment Methods

South African traders commonly look for EFT and local payment options such as Ozow, PayFast, or PayShap. The brokers on this list generally accept payments via EFT, bank wire, cards, and e-wallets, and none of them offer support for instant EFT through Ozow, PayFast, or PayShap. XM covers transaction costs on cards, e-wallets, and bank wires above $200, while VT Markets and PU Prime make the first wire withdrawal each month free and charge around $20 after.

Load-Shedding and VPS for Scalpers

Load-shedding interrupts power and internet at the trader's location, and scalpers and automated traders are the most exposed to it. A VPS keeps MT4/MT5 running independently of that connection, so an EA continues to manage open positions and stops during an outage. FP Markets, XM, VT Markets, and Pepperstone each offer VPS hosting, though all have attached conditions. FP Markets covers the cost from 5 standard lots a month; XM from a $5,000 balance and 5 lots a month; and Pepperstone's free plans are limited to Pro clients who meet a volume requirement.

Best Trading Hours for South Africa (SAST)

South Africa uses SAST (UTC+2) and does not observe daylight saving, so the local clock stays fixed while London and New York shift twice a year. Forex spreads are usually tightest when major financial centers overlap, and the London/New York overlap provides the deepest liquidity for EUR/USD and other major pairs. That overlap occurs roughly from 15:00 to 19:00 SAST during northern summer-time and from 16:00 to 20:00 during northern winter-time, with a few weeks each year when the two are out of step.

SARS Tax Treatment

Forex and CFD profits are taxable in South Africa, and SARS requires residents to declare them whether the broker is local or offshore. Treatment depends on the facts, including trading frequency and intention, but for most active retail traders, profits are assessed as revenue income and taxed at marginal rates ranging from 18% to 45%. Capital gains treatment is uncommon for CFDs, which do not carry no Section 9C safe harbor, so holding a position for longer does not, by itself, change the classification.

Profits are declared on the annual ITR12, and traders whose income is not subject to PAYE may need to register as provisional taxpayers and submit IRP6 returns in August and February. Foreign-currency amounts are converted to rand using SARS-published rates. Keep complete broker statements and consult a South African tax professional for individual advice.

Non-Trading Fees

A broker can win the spread comparison and still be more expensive overall if inactivity, withdrawal, or conversion fees are high. These charges also change more frequently than headline trading spreads do, so verify the current South African terms before opening an account.

Demo Accounts

Use demo trading to compare execution workflow, order types, and platform stability, but do not assume demo spreads and fills perfectly reproduce live liquidity.

  • FP Markets - Standard and Raw
  • CFI - Zero Commission and Dynamic Trader
  • XM - Ultra Low and Standard
  • VT Markets - Cent, Standard STP, Raw ECN, and Pro ECN
  • PU Prime - Cent, Standard, Prime, and ECN
  • Capital.com - A single account
  • AvaTrade - A single fixed-spread account
  • Pepperstone - Standard and Razor

Demo Pricing Check

Confirm that the demo environment reflects the account type you plan to fund. A Standard demo will not show you Raw pricing, and demo spreads and fills do not perfectly reproduce live liquidity.

Platform Types and Finding the Lowest Spread

The platform does not determine the spread on its own. The account type does. A Raw account on MT5 can be cheaper than a Standard account at the same broker even though both use the identical platform. Comparing like with like, Raw against Raw or Standard against Standard, gives the accurate picture. The platform still matters in two other ways. At Pepperstone, TradingView is available only on Razor accounts, so the platform choice determines the account. At Capital.com, MT4/MT5 offer 230+ instruments, compared to 5,500+ on its own platform. Indices are the exception to the account rule: Pepperstone quotes the same minimum spread on Razor and Standard, with no commission on either.

How to Start Trading with a Low-Spread Broker in South Africa - 6 Steps

  1. Choose the broker based on all-in cost and regulatory fit, not minimum spread alone.
  2. Open the account type you actually compared, choosing Raw or ECN if active trading cost is the priority, or a commission-free account where the broker offers no raw option.
  3. Test the same instruments and sessions on demo before funding.
  4. Check ZAR funding, conversion, and withdrawal costs, since only XM and AvaTrade hold accounts in rand.
  5. Use small live position sizes first and review realized spread plus slippage.
  6. Set up a VPS if automation or connection resilience matters, noting that free hosting is tied to volume or balance conditions at every broker here.

What to Avoid When Choosing a Broker in South Africa

  • Comparing a Raw account at one broker with a Standard account at another - one figure includes commission and the other does not.
  • Treating a 0.0-pip minimum as the average cost of trading - CFI quotes between 0.4 and 1.1 pips on the same account.
  • Ignoring round-turn commission on Raw accounts - it ranges from $2.00 to $7.00 across this list.
  • Assuming every FSCA-linked broker uses the South African entity as the derivative counterparty - four state in their own documents that it does not.
  • Ignoring ZAR conversion costs and local withdrawal charges - only two brokers here hold accounts in rand.
  • Choosing higher leverage without considering the larger effective transaction cost relative to margin - the spread is charged on the full position either way.

Bottom Line

For a South African trader, the decision rarely turns on a fraction of a pip. It turns on whether the account is held in rand or converted at every deposit and withdrawal, which entity is the counterparty to your trades, and what the round-turn commission adds once the headline spread is paid.

FP Markets leads because it offers both cost structures across four platforms, backed by an FSCA-regulated entity. CFI quotes the tightest commission-free spread here at 0.4 pips and asks for no minimum deposit, though the commission on its raw account is not published. XM and AvaTrade are the only two that hold accounts in ZAR, and XM opens at $5. Capital.com averages 0.6 pips on a single account and publishes a 0.7% conversion mark-up, the only broker here that discloses one. VT Markets and PU Prime suit traders who want raw pricing, though PU Prime's cheapest tier needs $10,000. Pepperstone serves the region from its Kenyan entity and offers the deepest platform tooling.

Whichever you choose, the checklist is the same: check the entity name on the FSCA register, add the round-turn commission to the spread before comparing anything, confirm whether your account will be held in rand, and demo the account type you actually intend to fund.

Ranking Methodology

We rank brokers by trading and non-trading costs, platform support, execution, and trader fit. FSCA status is verified against the FAIS register, while pricing reflects published data and our testing.

FAQs

Should I compare EUR/USD only?

expand.png

You should not compare EUR/USD only. It is useful for a like-for-like comparison, but also compare the actual pairs, metals, or indices you trade most often.

What is the cheapest type of Forex account?

expand.png

The cheapest type of Forex account depends on volume. For frequent traders, a Raw or ECN-style account can be cheaper despite commission. For lower-volume traders, a simple spread-only account can be competitive and easier to understand.

Can I use a ZAR account?

expand.png

You can use a ZAR account at XM and AvaTrade, both of which hold accounts in rand, so deposits, trades, and withdrawals stay in ZAR with no conversion at either end. PU Prime publishes nine base currencies, and ZAR is not included among them. Capital.com applies a 0.7% conversion markup to its exchange rate.

Does the FSCA cap Forex spreads?

expand.png

The FSCA does not cap Forex spreads. Brokers set their own pricing, and FSCA oversight does not guarantee a particular spread or commission level.

Do low spreads matter for swing trading?

expand.png

Low spreads matter less for swing trading. For positions held for days or weeks, financing, regulation, and platform fit may matter more than shaving a fraction of a pip.

Do low spreads matter for scalping?

expand.png

Low spreads matter greatly for scalping. Frequent entries and exits make small differences in spread, commission, and slippage compound quickly.

Is Pepperstone suitable for South African low-spread traders?

expand.png

Pepperstone is suitable for South African low-spread traders through its Razor account, which offers raw spreads from 0.0 pips on Forex and 0.08 on spot gold, with a commission of $3.50 per side. Pepperstone Markets Kenya Limited serves South African clients under CMA license 128, and the platform range covers MT4/MT5, cTrader, and TradingView.

Does XM have FSCA regulation?

expand.png

XM does have FSCA regulation. The FSCA authorizes XM ZA (Pty) Ltd under FSP 49976, and XM discloses that its derivative products are supplied by XM Global Limited or XM (SC) Limited. Hence, the South African entity acts as an intermediary rather than as your counterparty.

Is CFI a good low-spread broker for South Africa?

expand.png

CFI is a strong low-spread broker for South Africa, quoting the tightest commission-free spread on this list at 0.4 pips, with no minimum deposit and access to MT5, TradingView, CFI Multi-Asset, and the CFI Trading App. Its Dynamic Trader account offers raw spreads from 0.0 pips, though the commission is volume-based and not published.

Is a 0.0-pip spread free trading?

expand.png

A 0.0-pip spread is not free trading. Raw accounts typically charge commissions, and live spreads can exceed the advertised minimum.

Which low-spread brokers on this list are FSCA regulated?

expand.png

The FSCA-regulated brokers on this list are FP Markets, CFI, XM, VT Markets, PU Prime, Capital.com, and AvaTrade, all of which hold current FSCA authorizations. Pepperstone is the non-FSCA alternative, serving the region from its Kenyan entity.

Which broker has the lowest spreads in South Africa?

expand.png

The broker with the lowest spreads in South Africa depends on the pricing model. On commission-free pricing, CFI quotes EUR/USD at 0.4 pips, while Capital.com averages 0.6 pips. On commission-based pricing, several brokers quote from 0.0 pips. Hence, the round-turn commission determines it: PU Prime's ECN account charges $2.00, FP Markets and VT Markets charge $6.00, and Pepperstone's Razor charges $7.00.
